Vertical Blind Installation

Hanging vertical blinds is much easier than most people think. When it comes to this type of blind installation, you have two actual methods. First, there is the inside mount, which means the blind brackets are installed on the inside of the window jamb or the outside installation whereby mounts to on the outside of the window jamb or actually onto the wall. The type of horizontal blind installation you choose depends on the look you want, as well as any space available for an outside mount.

Inside Mount

We will start with the inside mount, which is the one most preferred. If your windows are in good condition, you want to show the woodwork off, and you like a clean, streamlined appearance, then the inside mount is the perfect choice. In this case, the vertical head rail is installed on the inside of the window frame with installation clips. If you choose blinds 52 inches or more, additionally clips would be required.

For the clips, these go into the ceiling of the frame with just one screw. Keep in mind that the screw has to be a minimum of 2.25 inches from the wall, window, or anything else protruding so you get full slat or vane rotation of the blinds. In addition, some window types may also require plugs which is based on the type of casing material. Then, the valance of preparation needs to be installed simultaneously with the mounting clips. Next, the valance is held up to the window, making sure it is perfectly centered. Then the screw is installed through the hole of the clip, going about .50 inches from the back edge of the valance, up into the frame ceiling. All the clips would be done the same way, with the screws being tightened in so the head rail is attached.

Outside Mount

Now, you could also use an outside mount, which allows the blinds to hang beyond the window frame. With the brackets, you would mark the location where you want them installed, usually at least 3 inches from the outside frame. The installation bracket would then be screwed through the hole, making sure the appropriate type screw is used. For instance, if you were going through concrete, the concrete screws would be required whereas if you were going through drywall, you need different type of screws.

Remember that the installation bracket for the horizontal blinds with an outside mount on the wall would need to be about 3 inches from each end. Once the bracket is level, the screw is driven into the second or anchor hole, keeping the bracket secure. All of the brackets for the head rail would be attached in the same manner. For the clips release flange, this would be installed going toward the window or wall. After everything is secured, the head rail would be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
